2017 Call for Proposals

Overview

The College of Liberal Arts values inclusion, diversity, equity and accountability within the campus community. The objective of this grant is to invigorate our college life with sustainable ideas that will further the goals outlined in our college strategic plan and commitments as well as the university’s strategic initiatives (see http://tx.ag/DgSMRor for more information). Who is eligible to apply?

Members of the College of Liberal Arts community – staff and faculty (academic professional track, tenure track, tenured) – are eligible to apply. The project must be supported administratively by a department or program. Project leaders must have the written approval of the Department Head or Program Director. Preference will be given to projects developed in partnership with at least one of the 12 departments’ climate & inclusion committees. Departments should aim to highlight connections with the goals outlined in the departments’ climate action plans.

Funding Amounts

Awards typically range from $3,000-$5,000 but can vary in amount, depending on the scope and impact of the project. The total available funding is $15,000. Funds cannot be used for TAMU faculty salaries. Any remaining unexpended funds will be returned to the college.

Timeline

Projects will typically run from May 1, 2017 to April 30, 2018. Final reports are due on May 31, 2018.

Types of Support

Funding is to be used to develop programs that will advance the college’s mission to promote a diverse and inclusive climate. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Innovative pedagogical training to help with curriculum development and implementation
  • Development of mentoring strategies and training for faculty
  • Workshop, lecture, and dialogue series
  • Civic engagement initiatives
  • Staff development programs relating to climate and diversity
  • Film series relating to diversity

Proposal Outline

Full proposals should be limited to 2 pages (excluding budget). Additional background information may be provided.

  • Project description: What are you proposing to do? What are the objectives of this project? What methods will be used to implement the project and what is the rationale for using them? What are the strategies and methods to ensure that participation in this project is achieved?
  • Significance: Why is this project important and significant to carry out? What needs are being met? What is the significance of the expected outcomes?
  • Challenges: What are the challenges you expect to encounter in implementing and reaching desired outcomes and how will you address them?
  • Preliminary plan for evaluation: How will the success of the project be evaluated? Funded projects will be required to provide a mid-year progress and budget report as well as a detailed final report and evaluation.
  • Detailed budget: Explain how and when funds will be spent.

Assessment Criteria

The proposals will be evaluated by a sub-committee of the college’s Climate & Inclusion committee using the following criteria:

  1. Potential to enhance diversity, climate, & inclusion (25%) – Does this project have the potential to improve the diversity, climate, equity, accountability, or/and inclusion objectives of our campus and college? How valuable is this approach in doing so?
  2. Impact – Will this project have short-term and long-term impact on campus climate, inclusion, and diversity? Which target groups will it be serving? (25%)
  3. Feasibility – Is this project realistic in its goals? Is it feasible to achieve the proposed outcomes within the time period and with the requested resources? (20%)
  4. Collaboration – Is this project partnering/benefiting from the strengths of other units on campus? (15%)
  5. Sustainability – Will this project have sustainable impact beyond the term of the grant? (15%)

  • Expanding the Communicating Diversity Conference by Tasha Dubriwny in the Communication Department
  • Lecture and Dialogue series for visits by faculty members from underrepresented groups in Social/Political Sciences and Humanities that teach outside Texas A&M by Diego von Vacano and Cary Nederman in the Political Science Department
  • A forum for the women in the Department of Hispanic Studies (including faculty, graduate students, and staff) to socialize, discuss important professional issues, and develop strategies to overcome common challenges. The forum will be organized around social events carried out at least four times during the year by Irene Moyna in the Hispanic Studies Department
  • A six-­‐night series of films and panel discussions on the Texas A&M campus, spread across the 2015-­‐2016 academic year, that speaks to and about under-­‐served, underrepresented minority groups by Daniel Humphrey and Carmela Garritano in the Film Studies Department
